What lessons have you learned from the crises you’ve experienced in your career?

Darya Anoshei, University of Washington Continuum College: Reflecting on the crises I've faced as an international educator, I realize the toughest ones taught me the most valuable lessons. The international student services office is often one of the busiest places on campus, handling a wide range of emergency situations involving international students. These situations have taught me the importance of clear communication and cultural sensitivity. By actively listening to students’ concerns and collaborating with various campus departments, we are able to find solutions and provide emotional support.

The most valuable lesson from these experiences has been about the significance of resilience and community care. Supporting each other and fostering a sense of belonging helps both students and educators navigate crises more effectively. It reinforces the idea that taking care of oneself and others is essential in overcoming challenges and building a supportive environment.

Additionally, having a crisis management plan is essential for effectively handling unexpected situations. A well-structured plan provides clear guidelines, identifies risks, allocates resources, and establishes communication channels. In international student services, such a plan addresses unique challenges, respects cultural sensitivities, and ensures tailored support. It
