Financial aid is a top area of concern for U.S. students considering study abroad, and yet there are differences in institutional interpretation of the regulations regarding disbursement and portability of federal funds.

Review the virtual Government Connection from June 14 at 2:00 p.m. (EDT), with a representative from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Federal Student Aid who discusses financial aid regulations for education abroad programs.

Michele Arellano moderated this Government Connection. Arellano is associate director of education abroad at the University of Kansas and chair of NAFSA's federal financial aid subcommittee.

Michele Arellano has been working in higher education administration since 1999 and, more specifically, in education abroad since 2002. She currently serves as the associate director of the Office of Study Abroad at the University of Kansas. Her main responsibilities are managing all student services functions, including enrollment management; scholarship and financial aid processing; and advising for, study abroad. Additionally, Arellano serves as study abroad liaison and main adviser to the university's financial aid office, registrar's office, and enrollment management office. She frequently presents on financing education abroad and has served on numerous internal and external scholarship review committees. She currently serves as member-at-large of NAFSA's Education Abroad Regulatory Practice (EARP) Committee and is chair of the EARP Financial Aid Subcommittee.
