Meet Samira Pouyanfar. Originally from Iran, she studied computer science as an international student at Florida International University. She also accepted a data science position with Microsoft Corporation’s data science team in Seattle, Washington, where she will use machine learning and artificial intelligence to power data analyses.

- Earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Florida International University (FIU)
- Led a team of graduate students working on the Florida Public Hurricane Loss Model, a hurricane catastrophe model developed to assess hurricane risks and quantify the cost benefits of hurricane preparedness
- Interned at the Volkswagen Research Lab in Silicon Valley, where an idea she proposed to apply a novel technology in artificial intelligence to selfdriving cars led to a new patent application
- Research has been featured in 30 peer-reviewed journals and conferences and has been cited over 280 times by researchers worldwide
