Melissa Hawkins, PhD
Melissa Hawkins, PhD, is the international teaching and learning specialist in the Center for Teaching and Learning at the University of Alabama—Birmingham. In this role, she conducts workshops for faculty focused on at-home internationalization initiatives, including how to incorporate international students’ presence and perspectives into classrooms, as well as international and intercultural content into disciplinary curricula. She holds MA-TESOL and EdS degrees, and recently completed her PhD in Educational Studies of Diverse Populations. Her research interests focus on international faculty, intercultural identity, and the influence of university internationalization on teaching practices. From 2022-23, Hawkins served on the Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship Knowledge Community's (TLS KC) leadership team as a network leader and subcommittee chair for Internationalizing Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum.
