About Inclusion and Equity

Proficiency in Inclusion & Equity for an international educator is about applying meaningful equity and inclusion frameworks to programming, events, and resources and to cultivate appreciation for cultural, developmental, or ability differences.

  • Articulate how to apply equity and inclusion frameworks to enhance programming, events, and resources.

Meet your Inclusion & Equity guide

Eduardo “Eddie” Contreras is the Vice Provost for Global Engagement at Baylor University, where he serves as the senior international officer. He also served as SIO and Chief Diversity Officer at the University of Portland. He has over two-decades of experience advocating and advancing internationalization and inclusion in higher education. He was in the NAFSA Education Abroad Knowledge Community (EAKC) chair cycle from 2019-2021, and has a chapter in NAFSA’s 2020 book, Social Justice and International Education. Eddie is a member of the Board of Directors for The Forum on Education Abroad, an editor for Frontiers: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Study Abroad, the 2023 chair of the 2022 Global Inclusion Conference, and is faculty co-chair for the Management Development Program at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Eddie has a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Texas at Austin, and a master’s and doctorate of education from Harvard.

About Program Development and Delivery

Proficiency in Program Development and Delivery for an international education is about being able to conduct needs assessment, consider impact of programs/people on communities and safeguard ethical decision-making.

  • Identify and apply needs assessment techniques to construct programs that align with institutional goals and address the specific needs of diverse audiences.
  • Evaluate the ethical implications of program decisions and integrate safeguarding measures to ensure responsible and impactful program delivery.
  • Develop strategies to assess the impact of programs on participants and surrounding communities, fostering inclusive and sustainable outcomes.
  • Collaborate with stakeholder to create and deliver learning experiences that support institutional objectives while promoting accessibility, inclusion, and community engagement.

Meet your Program Development & Delivery Guide

Chad Goeden is the Associate Director for International Student Programs in the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) at Columbia University. Chad has been active in teaching, advising, and programming in the field of international and intercultural education for more than 20 years. His teaching, training, and continued learning interests include intercultural communicative competence, teaching English as an International and Global Language, humanistic approaches to teaching and learning, and fostering communities of belonging and student success. Chad is a Returned Peace Corps Volunteer (RPCV) having served in Ukraine from 2004-2006.

Proficiency in Teaching, Learning and Facilitation for an international educator is about being able to create, teach, train, and present resources and materials to stimulate, engage, and develop skills, knowledge, and attitudes that meet defined objectives.

At the end of this Teaching, Learning and Facilitation module, you will be able to:

Meet your Teaching, Learning & Facilitation Guide

Eylem Atakav, PhD, is a professor of film, gender and public engagement at the University of East Anglia where she teaches courses on women, Islam and media; and Middle Eastern media. She also serves as the associate dean - international for the faculty of arts and humanities. She is the recipient of 2016 Society for Cinema and Media Studies Outstanding Contribution to Pedagogy Award and is a HEA National Teaching Fellow (2016). Atakav is the author of Women and Turkish Cinema: Gender Politics, Cultural Identity and Representation (2012) and editor of Directory of World Cinema: Turkey (Intellect, 2013). She recently completed an Arts and Humanities Research Council-funded project entitled British [Muslim] Values. She is the director of Growing Up Married (2016) – an internationally acclaimed and award-winning documentary about forced marriage and child brides in Turkey. Atakav served as the 2020 Chair of NAFSA's Teaching, Learning, and Scholarship Knowledge Community (TLS KC). She previously served as the NAFSA TLS KC Intercultural Communication and Training (ICT) Network Leader. She received her BA in film, television and radio studies from Ankara University; MA in media studies from Southampton Solent University; and her PhD in film and cultural studies from Nottingham Trent University.
