The 2025 NAFSA Annual Conference is partnering with San Diego intuitions and non-for-profits to host Learning Excursions for attendees. This year there will be four opportunities for attendees to sign up for an excursions.

Learning Excursion at University of San Diego: The Politics of the Environment
Presenter: Andrew Tirrell, JD, PhD - How do we solve environmental challenges that don’t respect borders? Transboundary environmental politics explores how countries collaborate to tackle global issues like pollution, biodiversity loss, and climate change. From shared rivers to migrating wildlife, these challenges demand complex, cooperative efforts that transcend politics to protect our planet. Join us for an enlightening learning excursion to the University of San Diego, featuring a campus tour, a masterclass and a Q&A panel of the University of San Diego Model UN leaders on their innovative high school conference designed to engage the next generation in international cooperation.
Learning Excursion with Via International: Border Walks and Talks with Via International: Migration Dialogues, Community Art and Sustainable Development in San Diego's Emerging Communities
Presenters: Gabriel Reed, PhD and Molly Porth Cabrera, MPA - Join Via International for an afternoon immersion exploring San Diego’s vibrant cultural corridor. The experience features a walking tour at the U.S.-Mexico Border in Imperial Beach, an introduction to the iconic murals at Chicano Park in Barrio Logan, and a special event at Via International’s headquarters in the Bread and Salt cultural center. Engage in a community-based dialogue with local leaders as they share insights on building resilient communities while embracing the global dynamics of immigration.

Learning Excursion at San Diego State University: Leveraging Generative AI for International Education
Presenter: Sean Hauze, PhD - Join us for an enlightening learning excursion at San Diego State University, featuring a campus tour and a masterclass on leveraging Generative AI in International Education. Learn how AI tools can support international educators in creating inclusive and effective communication, such as real-time translated captions and culturally relevant summaries. Participants will engage with AI-driven tools to address the needs of a diverse audience in alignment with the conference theme, “Purpose, Place, and Partnership.”
Learning Excursion at University of California San Diego: Design-Driven Innovation in Higher Education
Presenter(s): TBD How can design-driven innovation transform higher education and create real-world solutions for pressing community challenges? At the University of California San Diego, design education and research are integrated with the needs of the dynamic San Diego-Tijuana region. This learning excursion explores how The Design Lab fosters collaboration and creativity to address critical issues, featuring a campus tour and highlights from UC San Diego’s renowned Stuart Collection artwork. The excursion continues at UC San Diego’s Scripps Institution of Oceanography, a global leader in earth science research and education. Participants will tour the iconic Ellen Browning Scripps Memorial Pier and discover how innovative scientific research and design-driven approaches combine to create lasting, impactful solutions in the future.
