2019 Preconference Workshops
Workshops for new and experienced practitioners!
In addition to the many sessions, open meetings and networking opportunities available at this year's conference in Addison, Region III will offer seven pre-conference workshops that are part of NAFSA's Core Education Program (CEP.) These workshops introduce participants to best practices and provide them with must-have training. Whether in the area of education abroad, international student advising or international enrollment management, workshop participants gain a combination of specific knowledge and the skills to research further.
The following workshops will take place on Sunday, November 3 from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- F-1 Student Advising for Beginners
- F-1 Student Advising: Intermediate
- J-1 Advising: Intermediate
These two half-day workshops will take place on Sunday, November 3 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
- Recruiting International Students
- Student Health and Safety Abroad
Two additional half-day workshops will take place on Sunday, November 3 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Admission and Placement of International Students
- Risk Assessment and Crisis Management in Education Abroad Programming
All CEP workshops trainers are highly qualified members of NAFSA's Trainer Corps. Workshop enrollment is limited to allow participants more opportunity to interact with, and learn from, others in the field.
Registration for workshops is now open but closes on Friday, October 4. The registration fee includes all materials, coffee breaks and lunch. Please note that individuals registering for either the two International Enrollment Management workshops, or the two Education Abroad workshops, will receive a discounted rate. Remember that there is no on-site registration for workshops. So don't delay. Register today.
If you have any questions, please contact Sue Marlay.
The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport’s Port of Entry (POE) Tour
The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport’s Port of Entry (POE) tour, hosted by the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Officers is scheduled for November 3, 2019 and will last for approximately four (4) hours. The goal of this tour is to provide school officials a glimpse into the immigration process our nonimmigrant students undergo when entering the United States. The tour will be conducted by a CBP Supervisor and will discuss the initial immigration screening process, as well as secondary inspection. Sign up.
If you are interested in attending the tour, please register as soon as possible as this tour is limited to 32 spots. In an effort to extend this offer to multiple institutions, we kindly ask that schools only nominate one or two P/DSOs per institution. If you have already participated in this tour feel free to pass this along to the other DSO’s at your school so they may attend. A $20 registration fee will be charged with conference registration when Early Bird Registration opens in August.
Diversity/Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) Forum
There will also be a Diversity/Minority Serving Institutions (MSI) Forum from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm. This is a half-day workshop focused on increasing diversity in international education and providing support to HBCU’s and Minority Serving Institutions. This year, Gretchen Cook-Anderson from IES will be conducting the Diversity Forum. Presentations will also be given by former participants of NAFSA’s Diversity Impact Program. There will be a resource fair with NAFSA resources and other international education resources.
Registration fee: $50 for members; $75 for nonmembers.
