Today, former President Donald Trump was elected president and his running mate, Senator J.D. Vance, vice president. The following is a statement by Dr. Fanta Aw, Executive Director and CEO of NAFSA: Association of International Educators:
“For more than 75 years, NAFSA has advocated for policies that expand the reach and impact of international education. We remain committed to educating the incoming administration and Congress on the regulatory changes and policies that will strengthen the field and extend opportunities for global learning.
“This mission is as critical as ever. In today’s interdependent and complex world, success requires students to know how to engage across differences to find common understanding and shared interests. International education—from study abroad programs to the inclusion of international students and scholars on U.S. campuses—prepares students with these essential skills, knowledge, and habits of mind. This is not about politics, this is about preparing the leaders of tomorrow.
“However, with increasing competition for the world’s best and brightest students, and only a small fraction of U.S. college students studying abroad, U.S. global competitiveness is at stake. Working with Congress and the Trump administration, we will advocate for policies that strengthen the U.S. role in research, workforce development, knowledge diplomacy, and national security. International education is a vital asset to the United States.
“Together with our more than 10,000 members, we will be a strong voice for articulating the profound impact of regulatory practices and public policies on students, scholars, and the institutions they enrich. These policies shape not only our educational landscape, but also U.S. economic strength, civil society, and our global standing. In an interconnected world, it is essential for the United States to remain a part of the global community, not apart from it. Our collective future depends on it.”
