NAFSA Study Abroad Task Force Releases Report
NAFSA's Task Force on Institutional Management of Study Abroad today released a report and related resources intended to prompt discussion and reflection at the highest levels on university and college campuses about how institutions can effectively integrate, sustain, and strengthen study abroad.
The report, Strengthening Study Abroad: Recommendations for Effective Institutional Management, provides a set of recommendations written by a task force of presidents and senior administrators for their colleague presidents and senior administrators. It highlights four areas of specific management challenges that institutional leaders must confront:
- Building institutional commitment;
- Establishing a study abroad infrastructure;
- Providing adequate resources; and
- Ensuring clarity and accountability.
Six major higher education associations have endorsed the report: the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), the American Council on Education (ACE), the Association of American Universities (AAU), the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities (NAICU).
This report represents an important resource for stimulating discussions on campuses among senior administrators, education abroad professionals, and other campus stakeholders in study abroad. Study abroad professionals are encouraged to use the report as an opportunity to focus their campus leadership on these important issues and to review their program policies and procedures to see how well they reflect the task force recommendations.
"We expect that this report will serve as a key catalyst for discussions among campus leaders about how each institution can effectively integrate, sustain, and strengthen study abroad," said NAFSA Executive Director and CEO Marlene Johnson. "It sets out a strong road map for our continued collective work to advance study abroad that is transparently managed, pedagogically sound, appropriately financed, accessible, and safe."
