Exemplary Colleges to Receive Second Annual Senator Paul Simon Awards for Campus Internationalization
Selected schools featured in forthcoming report
WASHINGTON, February 15, 2005 - NAFSA: Association of International Educators is pleased to announce the recipients of the second annual Senator Paul Simon Award for Campus Internationalization. The selected colleges and universities will be featured in the NAFSA report Internationalizing the Campus 2005: Profiles of Success at Colleges and Universities, to be published this fall. They are Colby College, Colgate University, Howard Community College, the University of California, Los Angeles, and the University of Kansas.
The award is named for the late Senator Paul Simon (D - Ill.), who identified international education as an issue of crucial importance for the future strength and security of the United States. Senator Simon spearheaded an effort to create the Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Fellowship Program, a bold and visionary federal program to dramatically increase the number of students at U.S. higher education institutions studying abroad in quality programs, with special emphasis on developing countries and on expanding opportunities for previously underrepresented groups. A congressional commission has been formed to consider and recommend such a program.
Three additional schools were selected for program or area spotlights in the NAFSA report. They are Columbus State Community College, El Camino College, and the University of Denver.
This year's selections were made by the project's Selection Jury, whose members were Stephen Curtis (Community College of Philadelphia), Stephen Dunnett, Chair (University at Buffalo - SUNY), Connie Perdreau (Ohio University), Wendy Weiner (Virginia Community College System), and Jim Williams (George Washington University).
