NAFSA Proposes Bipartisan Legislative Agenda on International Education
Plan includes immigration reform, a competitiveness agenda, and a national study abroad program
WASHINGTON, December 18, 2006 – NAFSA: Association of International Educators has issued an international education agenda for the 110th Congress, setting out a detailed legislative proposal to support and enhance U.S. global leadership, security, and competitiveness.
“As the new congressional leadership prepares its priorities for the coming session, international educational exchanges must be an integral part of the agenda,” said NAFSA Executive Director and CEO Marlene Johnson. “These programs serve U.S. interests in fundamental ways, including building the skills of Americans to work effectively in today’s global environment, developing close ties with the leadership of other nations, improving our ability to compete in the global age, and providing a foundation for addressing global challenges. Now is the time for Congress to assert leadership and enact bold international education legislation.”

NAFSA’s “Bipartisan Legislative Agenda for the 110th Congress” sets out three major initiatives:
- Comprehensive legislation to restore U.S. competitiveness for international students and scholars
- The Abraham Lincoln Study Abroad Fellowship Program
- Comprehensive immigration reform.
