Letter to the Chicago Tribune
March 23, 2007
To the Editor:
Illinois should take pride in another one of its own in the effort to ensure that American college students are educated about the world (“Paul Simon’s Dream,” March 23): Senator Dick Durbin has been a tireless champion of a national study abroad program. He served on the bipartisan commission that Congress established, at Sen. Simon’s behest, to craft the program, and he, along with Minnesota’s Sen. Norm Coleman, introduced the first bill on the subject, in the last Congress. The Lantos/Ros-Lehtenin bill to which you refer takes us a significant step forward, and we expect Sens. Durbin and Coleman to introduce companion legislation soon. We appreciate the Tribune’s support for this important legislation.
