Maximizing Funding for Education Abroad
Audience: Mid-career professionals will learn about and strategically plan for four key education funding areas: student funding, advocacy, grants, and institutional budgets.
International educators often have financial responsibilities, but few have specific training in financial management or fund raising. This workshop addresses financial issues of practical use in running study abroad programs and managing an office. Topics covered include:

- Working with financial aid
- Managing an office budget
- Working with an institution for funding support
- Advocacy with government and nongovernmental funding sources
- Grant writing
Important ethical considerations are involved when working with money and different funding sources will also be discussed.
Workshop Objectives
- Understand various types of student funding and how to collaborate on processes that maximize student funding opportunities
- Practice skills for advocating for funding both within an institution and with outside sources such as the federal government
- Examine strategies for managing budgets and budget policies that support education abroad activities and offices
- Develop strategies for effective decisions about grants and grant writing
- Develop the beginnings of a strategic plan around funding issues specific to your offices and institutions
