Fundamentals of Short Term Education Abroad Programming
Audience: Designed for professionals new to education abroad and/or short-term programs.
This workshop provides a comprehensive foundation in key aspects of short-term study abroad programming. With an outcomes based perspective, participants will explore “campus cultures” so they can identify and best use internal support systems to design and deliver institution-sponsored short-term programs. Explore a variety of short term program models. Participants will learn the basics of financial management. Tools used in designing successful programs will be shared and participants will learn how to implement action plans, carry out assessment and prepare participants for their time away from campus. This workshop is highly interactive and is designed for professionals new to education abroad and/or short-term programs.
Workshop Objectives
- Develop a clear understanding of ways to use internal support systems in designing faculty-led short-term programs.
- Develop an understanding of short-term program models and be able to determine which of those models best fit the participants’ home institution.
- Develop an understanding of financial management of short-term programs.
- Develop an awareness of the logistical process for operating short-term programs, such as timelines, budgeting, on-site arrangements, and student recruitment.
- Learn strategies to responsibly prepare faculty, staff, and students for the short-term experience.
- Appreciate why assessment is important and to understand the fundamentals of designing an effective assessment plan.
