Managing the Education Abroad Office


Audience: New U.S.-based (and non-U.S.) study abroad professionals who are new to the responsibilities and tasks of designing, implementing, and managing programs sponsored by their own institutions. While participants will have some experience in study abroad advising and recruitment and might have completed the workshop on Education Abroad Advising, they should have three to five years of experience in the field of education abroad.

This 12-hour workshop provides training in education abroad administration for education abroad professionals with three to five years experience at a university/college campus or with an education abroad provider. The focus of the workshop is on developing skills necessary for advancing to a managerial-level position within an education abroad office on a university/college campus. Topics include: strategic planning, assessment and evaluation, risk management, developing a crisis management plan, introduction to budgeting, contracts management, and basic office management.

  • Draft a three-year strategic plan for your office
  • Write a risk management plan for your office
  • Describe how policies are developed and approved on your campus
  • Develop an operational budget
  • Track exchange balances
