International Student Advising Workshop


Audience: International Student Advisers for approximately 15 months.

This interactive workshop provides new international student advisers (1.5 years of experience or less) with an introduction to various theories and practical applications beneficial to professionals. Topics include:
  • The role and responsibilities of the International Student Adviser (ISA)
  • Ethical considerations
  • Dealing with crises
  • Orientation and programming
  • Intercultural communication
  • Advising and counseling
  • Advocacy
  • Utilizing resources

Although the workshop focuses on U.S.-based ISAs, past participants from abroad have also found the workshop helpful.

Note: Detailed information about immigration regulations and SEVIS procedures are not included in this workshop.

Workshop Objectives

  • Conceptual framework for foreign student advising and understanding of the fundamental issues advisers face in the day-to-day balancing of pressures that fall upon them
  • Knowledge of orientation and crisis management
  • Skills in problems analysis and intercultural interactions
