Basics of Effective U.S. International Admissions


Audience: Those who work with international applications to U.S. based institutions (admissions offices, English language programs, etc.) and have 3 or less years of experience in this area.

The 9-hour workshop is for those who work with international applications to U.S. based institutions (admissions offices, English language programs, etc.) and have 3 or less years of experience in this area. It is designed to provide participants with essential tools and a framework to learn, apply and create an effective and professional international admissions office. The workshop examines the institutional factors that impact international admissions including institutional policies and strategic planning, benchmarking and allies; admission policies including English proficiency; office procedures such as data and file management; as well as the basics of international student recruitment including types of recruitment, communication, and some basic marketing concepts. Note: This workshop does not address the formal review or evaluation of foreign academic credentials.

Workshop Objectives
  • Consistently implement institutional policy and understand institution’s strategic plan and its impact on international admissions
  • Assess and benchmark office practices in comparison to peer and aspirant peer institutions
  • Build allies/allegiances/relationships to serve the interests of the international admissions office
  • Ethically and consistently apply admission policies in the collection and verification of financial and admission documents
  • Determine English language proficiency
  • Collect and analyze data to generate projections and improve office procedures
  • Examine various methods of file management
  • Identify types of international student recruitment
  • Define audiences and design message for audience
  • Identify components of a communication stream
  • Apply institutional practices to benefit recruitment
