Former Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration Anne C. Richard provides NAFSA with an overview of the U.S. and worldwide refugee crisis. This video conversation with NAFSA Executive Director and CEO Esther Brimmer was recorded on May 29, 2018, at the NAFSA 2018 Annual Conference. Ms. Richard is now the Centennial Fellow of the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University and formerly was a vice president of the International Rescue Committee leader.
The refugee crisis has become an omnipresent reality of contemporary news headlines. It is not just a U.S. immigration issue, but it is a global crisis. By its formal definition, there are more than 25 million refugees in the world according to the UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency. Within the U.S. and globally, there are multiple organizations that support the effort to relocate displaced refugees, but much more work needs to be done.
