Life Membership

The 2008 nomination process is now closed.
Life Membership is awarded each year to senior NAFSA members to recognize their achievements in advancing the goals of the association and of international education and exchange. Individuals may be nominated upon retirement from professional responsibilities in the field of international education. Awards are NOT automatically given to members who attain emeritus status. A plaque and lifetime membership benefits are presented at the annual business meeting each year.

Criteria Used by the Awards Subcommittee to Select Nominees

A nominee must have been a NAFSA member for at least 20 years, and who has:
  • National recognition in and contributions to the field of international education over the duration of their career
  • Been elected or appointed to multiple NAFSA national leadership positions
  • Made important and lasting contributions to the field of international education and exchange
  • Has positively influenced the lives or careers of participants or professionals in the field

Nomination Procedures

Three NAFSA members from three different regions must each submit letters of reference for the nominee, or two NAFSA members from two different U.S. regions and one member based outside the U.S. must each submit letters of reference for the nominee. In addition, the nomination form must be filled out by the primary nominator. Letters of nomination should describe in detail how the individual has demonstrated the criteria listed above and elaborate on the nominee’s accomplishments in elected or appointed positions in NAFSA and in the field. Successful nominations are selected by the Awards Subcommittee and forwarded to the Chair of the Membership Committee for information and to the Board of Directors for approval.
